I see that you guys do not listen, just a couple of days after I gave you the best advice for Valentine’s Day, you guys are already planning gifts that might lead to baby tears next year. I understand minds go crazy this time of the year, but please listen to an old-timer.

Valentine’s Day! It is a time for grand romantic gestures, even by those who are spawns of the devil. There are roses, chocolates, and in my friend’s case, an adorable little puppy. His plan, I assume, was to completely sweep a girl off her feet and into a relationship. The ultimate symbol of love was going to be a fluffy bundle of joy with big eyes ready to be loved and cherished. What he failed to ascertain was that he would meet obstacles on the way, and it is not even Valentine’s yet.

I have got his blessing to share this story because I think it is hilarious. Here goes.

Perfect Valentine’s: Love at First Woof

Let me share a little background about this friend of mine. Some years ago, I got acquainted with a guy off social media. He was such a chilled guy and had a peaceful aura around him, although he did not know it, and still does not know. Our friendship started from some silly posts on social media, but he became my family.

We were able to build a relationship where we both knew we could depend on the other at any time. If you’ll read this, which I know you will, I am forever thankful that you became my family. Also, because I can write about you and make fun of your misery lol.

The Search for a Perfect Valentine’s Gift

A couple of days ago, I received a phone call with one ask: to find an insanely beautiful white fluffy puppy that could be delivered on Valentine’s Day to a mysterious girl. He maintained that he wanted the dog to be white, because of the cuteness, but I assume that the other reason was to ensure it fit the Valentine’s theme. Either way, I immediately got to work.

I had a few questions about the girl because I had not received an update about there being someone new, but either way, I was going to help him find the perfect puppy. So, I took to my WhatsApp status asking for help from my contacts. That came with one problem: those I owe money thought I had suddenly stumbled on money and was making stupid purchases before paying them back.

Perhaps my wording of the status was wrong. I am only thinking now that I should have taken a screenshot of it. However, I did not think I would be here narrating this story to you guys. If I remember right, the status was worded like this:

I am looking for puppies. Not the Popi or Bruno kind, I want the ones that have a ridiculous reward amount when they go missing.

People thought the signs of my richness were showing, but the whole time I was just looking for a puppy, so my buddy could score points. Anywho, it took me a couple of explanations to my lenders before one of them shared a link to a Facebook post where someone was advertising that they were selling puppies.

Valentine's Day Gift

One look at this dog and I was sold. This puppy was perfect. It looked sweet and ready for a new home, and its cuteness was going to land him into a relationship.

We came up with the perfect plan: the seller was going to hold on to the puppy until Valentine’s Day for the ultimate surprise. I could not keep it at my home for fear of having my three-year-old getting attached to it and then being separated from it days later.

Till today, we were just waiting for Friday to make sure I set up the logistics so this lucky girl could have her new baby.

The Grand (Failed) Surprise

This evening, I got a message from him saying to abort the mission. He had failed to do one big research task before deciding a puppy was the ideal gift for this lucky girl. That research was: who did she stay with?

My expectations were that I would be told she had immediately fallen in love with the puppy and that she swore to give him a loving home. A couple of days before Valentine’s Day, I guess he decided to tell her so that she was not overly surprised by what she would be receiving. The response he got was the polar opposite of both our expectations.

According to the girl, her parents utterly denied having a dog that had to stay inside their home. In his own words:

African parents ruin romance.

Yes, yes they do. According to a lot of African parents, dogs are security guards that stay outside the house and are only unchained during nighttime. They see puppies as wasteful and unnecessary, especially because they need more care, and they are not the guards they need.

In my defense, I had told him to get her a dog like the African Brunos, but he vehemently denied it.

Now, we have a dog that we secured that needs to be delivered on Valentine’s Day, and yet the main recipient cannot keep it in her parent’s house. Welp!

The Lesson We Have Learned: Always Ask!

Valentine's Day Gift

So, if you’re planning a big Valentine’s Day surprise, learn from my friend: puppies are adorable, but parental disapproval is stronger than puppy love. Perhaps, it is best to keep to the bouquet of roses and the chocolates as usual as gifts.

Unless, of course, her parents are diabetic, or have sinusitis problems like mine. In that case… just take her out to dinner. Or, admit that you are screwed.
