Something you will realize way early as a new mom is how important it is to have a community around your baby. When they said it takes a village to raise a child, they knew what they were saying. Having an effective community comes in handy during so many situations, and ultimately allows the baby to understand the value of relationships. However, building such communities can be hard for a new mom. Hopefully, by the end of this reading, it will help guide you on how to choose people to be in that community.
Having such communities is especially beneficial to single moms because they have no one to fall on. And if you happen to be someone curious about how to be supportive of your mom-friends, this reading is also for you.
importance of having a community
If you are about to be a new mom, I won’t beat around the bush, MOTHERHOOD IS HARD. You will learn in the first few months how stressful it can be, and if you do not have people who are willing to be there for you, it will be harder. The people around you help take the load off your back for a few moments so that you can breathe and get some much-needed rest.
Not to scare you, motherhood is also one of the most precious things that can happen to anyone that wants it. However, it is important to take care of your mental health so that you can be the best version of yourself to the baby and yourself.
At the same time, having an effective community becomes a shield for your child. The people you allow to be around your child become his or her’s protection. That is why it is important to know the kind of people you want to have around your cub.
The people you have around the baby will help set the foundation for their moral upbringing, and overall also gives them a sense of belonging.
However, a community of fellow moms also allows you to connect with your peers and allows your kids to learn how to bond because they are seeing the same in their parents. I have seen the beauty of having mom friends because each time I go through something with my baby, I can always ask them for advice. And they have also become my shoulder to cry on when things get tough.
Never underestimate online communities as well, they help with quick fixes and keep you levelheaded.
how to build a community for your baby
Like building friendships, building a community for your baby can be nerve-wracking. However, the most important thing I have learned is that when you are very intentional with the people you want around your child, they will reciprocate the energy toward both you and the baby.
Here are a few tips that can guide you in building that awesome village for your child:
- Allow bonding time: you have to allow time for your child to bond with your support system so that they become familiar with them and feel a sense of safety around them. This also means visiting them in their homes so that babies can be comfortable in their spaces as well. Familiarity is the most crucial point.
- Freedom to bond independently: when my son turned a year old, I had to learn this quickly. I started allowing him to play with other kids around the neighborhood which ended up with him building his own social bonds. This also allowed me to meet new moms who have become friends as well, women that I would just pass by before.
- Acknowledge the people in your community: we all know that humans sometimes need assurance that they are part of something. It is important to acknowledge the people in your child’s village. A lot of my support system will hear me say it as a joke on how I’ll take my child to them when I need to rest. Even though it comes out as a joke, I know that when such a time comes around, they are my go-to. It also makes them know that I trust them with my child.
- State boundaries: every relationship needs boundaries, the same applies to this. With every person within your community, make sure to set boundaries and community those boundaries. You need to make people know which lines not to cross.
