My Ultimate Morning Routine

By Caroline Luka

They say your morning routine sets the tone for the rest of your day. When we wake up “on the wrong side of the bed,” our days often dwell on the negative side. We tend to be moody, grumpy, agitated and most times we become servants to procrastination. On the other hand, when we wake up feeling happy and feel like we are on top of the world, the rest of the day is usually filled with bliss. Of course, every now and again, things may happen that alter our morning vibe but regardless of that, morning routines are very important.

“Your morning routine generates a 10X return for good or for bad. Make it good.”  – Todd Stocker

Here is what I usually do every morning: I used the word “usually” because to be honest I don’t do these things every day. I wish I did though, but some days are harder than most. Regardless of these cloudy days, here is what my morning routine looks like.

My Ultimate Morning Routine

1. Read

When my 6:00 am alarm goes off, it takes me a minute or fifteen to fully wake up! I get my phone and read something. I have started the habit of reading the daily Bible verses and so far, so good. My heart breaks when I miss a streak! I read a verse or two and then get on my Twitter. I get all the current affairs on there. That app is quite handy. It gives you everything. I religiously visit this page @sciaptweets to get my “self-care is a priority” tweets and then proceed to my timeline for whatever news and interesting stories I can find that day. However, Twitter has a downside, sometimes I read things that make me sad, mad or angry. It’s a gamble, really.

 2. Drink Water

Morning routine: drink water

Drinking water in our house is a MUST! My housemate, Blue, and I have a target of drinking a minimum of 2 litres a day. Hectic! We have normalized this such that I feel bad when I don’t meet my daily target. I usually drink 1 litre before I eat anything and then drink the rest as the day goes on.

 3. Listen to a Podcast

I started listening to podcasts late last year and I have never turned back. Podcasts are part of my morning routine because I feel that once I listen to something, be it motivational, spiritual, informative or entertaining, I have a positive vibe that day. My favorite podcasts are “Jesus and Jollof” (I looooove it!), “Conversations with Mpumi and Yolz” and “Joel Osteen.” I subscribed to these three and boy, do I see things differently now! I am open to trying out others as well, so feel free drop your favorite podcasts in the comment section.

4. Breakfast

Morning routine: breakfast

I am a firm believer in “breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” I have to have my breakfast or else I get cranky. I usually make my breakfast big, tasty and creative! I love bread, and sandwiches are my specialty. I am more of a tea girl than coffee and yes, I keep my tea bag (or two) in the cup. It’s awhole thing.

Doing these four things keeps me sane and ever since I started my morning routines, I am happier. I am at peace. I believe that the first hours of the day are yours to utilize. Be selfish with them. Mold your day. I will leave you with a quote that I intend to add to my morning routine. Feel free to comment on what your morning routines are! Don’t forget to like and share.

Smile in the mirror.

Do that every morning and

you’ll see a big difference in your life
