Sometimes sadness hits you so bad. You wake up and feel like not opening the curtains, to allow the darkness in the room fully connect with the darkness within you. And all that is alright. Often times, when that happens, we look for comfort in songs that greatly connect with our emotions. To make it easier for you, here are a select of 10 sad songs on my playlist.
These songs are the recent added songs on my Melancholy playlist, they have different emotions to them but lovely pieces of work. A link to the full playlist will be added at the end of this post.
Sadness is but a wall between two gardens – Khalil Gibran
1. Billie Eilish – Everything I Wanted
This is a beautiful song in the most haunting ways. It is a song that talks about a nightmare she had, which leads to her jumping off the Golden (I found out it is a bridge in San Fran called Golden Gate Bridge). When she wakes up, she finds her brother Finneas, who assures her.
I tried to scream But my head was underwater They called me weak Like I’m not just somebody’s daughter
2. Hailee Steinfied – Wrong Direction
A song for that one person you fell for who was just wrong in many ways. Hailee also put out some beautiful ballads that string the cords of the heart.
I don’t hate you No, I couldn’t if I wanted to I just hate all the hurt that you put me through And that I blame myself for letting you Did you know I already knew? Couldn’t even see you through the smoke Lookin’ back, I probably should have known But I just wanted to believe that you were out sleepin’ alone
3. Demi Lovato – Anyone
I fell in love with this song after her Grammy performance. Then I gave it a proper listen and cried at the lyrics. She has said that this was written before her in 2018. And to be honest, it really sounds like a song that is a cry for help.
Anyone, please send me anyone Lord, is there anyone? I need someone, oh
4. Mac Miller – Everybody
It still hurts that he is gone, but this song really had it with my heart. The lyrics could easily point at him knowing he was going soon. And as though, he had come to accept that fate.
Everybody’s gotta live And everybody’s gonna die Everybody just wanna have a good, good time I think you know the reason why
5. Sam Smith – To Die For
Ever thought that everyone around you is in love and happy, apart from you? And you yearn so bad to find your own someone, but to no avail? This is what this song will make you feel, especially if you have been alone for a while. Makes it worse when your ex starts seeing….
Couples holding hands on a runway They’re all posing in a picture frame whilst my world’s crashing down Solo shadow on a sidewalk Just want somebody to die for
6. Maroon 5 – Memories
Did you see the performance to this song as dedication to Kobe and Gianni Bryant? The most soul touching, heart wrenching performance of Adam. This song will make you remember people you lost in your life, whether due to death or failed relationships or friendships.
Everybody hurts sometimes Everybody hurts someday, ay ay But everything gon’ be alright Go and raise a glass and say, ayy

7. Kelsea Ballerini – Homecoming Queen?
This song reminds me so much of Pretty Hurts by Beyoncé. Just like pretty hurts, it talks about hiding insecurities and smiling through the pain.
Hey homecoming queen Why do you lie When somebody’s mean Where do you hide Do people assume you’re always alright Been so good at smiling Most of your life.
8. Mac Miller – Good News
His music hits different now that he is gone. Remember what I said above?
Why does everyone need me to stay? Oh, I hate this feeling When you’re high but you’re underneath the ceiling
9. Lewis Capaldi – Before Yo Go
There’s nothing torturous as losing a loved one to suicide. You go through so many thoughts about what you could’ve done to help them heal, to make them feel better etc. And this song is just that.
When you hurt under the surface Like troubled water running cold Well, time can heal, but this won’t
10. Selena Gomez – People You Know
This song reminds me of a friend, who slowly is becoming someone I used to know.
We used to be close, but people can go From people you know to people you don’t What hurts the most is people can go From people you know to people you don’t
Bonus: Billie Eilish – No Time To Die
I am a sucker for Bond soundtracks, and this new one is amazing. A song about betrayal with Billie’s voice is 🔥.
We were a pair But I saw you there Too much to bear You were my life But life is far away from fair
